What, no appetite for pigeon?

On one of our irregular shootin' trips to the lake we managed to spot this Grebe (one of a pair) doing some huntin' and fishin' - it's so rare to be able to catch a bird doing something interesting so catching one with its lunch was definitely worth the walk (although not half as good as catching a pelican eating a pigeon, of course).

All we need now is a better camera...

Up, up and away!

Here we are in late October and the rose bush outside the front door is STILL growing. It's a north-facing house so it doesn't get a huge amount of sunlight. The grass never goes brown, though, so I assume it gets all the water it needs (especially THIS month!)

We are thinking of using it to make an rose archway to our door, and maybe run it up the side of the house. How big are these bushes supposed to grow before gravity tells them not to be so silly?

Strange times

26% of the season gone - top and bottom teams are starting to show their hands. Hull and Southend I could expect but Leeds "big club" United is a surprise. And Cardiff and maybe Wolves in the Prem? Strange times, strange times indeed.

Harry Hill On Tour

This was my first chance to see Harry Hill live and it was free (connections, you see). Not paying was good as I'm not sure I'd have wanted to spend the tenner that the punters had to pay. And, to make things worse, all the pumps in the bar had no gas so only bottled beers were on offer at pint prices. If I'd paid to get in AND had to pay through the nose for beer I'd have been really pissed off.

Anyway Harry Hill live, what is it? Sort of a mix between weird stand-up and a covers band more used to doing weddings. Some of the humour is very clever and spot on, the rest is just bizarre stuff that I don't understand (see League of Gentleman, Shooting Stars, et al).

Harry did make an inspired effort to inject some local flavour with a blending of Blur's "Parklife" and the Student Union's "Spark" newspaper where he read out frontpage news of the planned closing of the Physics department in the style of Phil Daniels. You think, "well, that's an obvious thing to do" but you know you wouldn't have thought of doing it in a million years.

Unlike the woman in the badger costume.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to work today...

Due to various logistical reasons, my bike was at work today and my wife couldn't drop me off as she had an early dentist appt. So I decided to walk - no problem, I thought, only 45 minutes and I have a big Microsoft golf brolley.

I hadn't taken my wife into account. Not wanting to take a raincoat and desperately requiring protection to and from the car, she decided her need for the umbrella was paramount. As I gently dozed, she drove off...

Never mind, I thought, or words to that effect as it was hardly raining when I left. I managed to get to within a mile of my office when I realised I had left my security pass on the breakfast table at home. At that precise moment the heavens opened, the lightning flashed and the thunder rolled. By the time I got to work and through security, only one item of clothing was not wet.

Being a bright spark, I had packed a dry pair of jeans in my rucksack - they didn't get completely soaked. And my (very underused) football kit on my desk includes spare trainers, socks and T-shirt    :-)
